Lakers Ron Artest to change name to Metta World Peace

Los Angeles Lakers forward Ron Artest had his attorney has file a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday to legally change his name to Metta World Peace.

 

Artest's was born Ronald William Artest Jr. 31 years ago and cited personal reasons as to why he wanted to change his name and a court date has been set for Aug. 26 to consider the petition.

 

The Lakers are aware of Artest's filing and are still debating whether to have "Peace" or "World Peace" on the back of his jersey next season.

 

Artest's has had a career that has been filled with ups and downs.

 

He was a key member on the Lakers Championship team of a year ago and in April Artest received an award for outstanding service and dedication to the community.

 

Artest is also well known for being the instigator of a may be best known for triggering the most unmitigated and nasty fight in NBA history in November of 2004 while he was playing for the Indiana Pacers when he jumped into the stands and attacked a fan.

 

After the incident, Artest was suspended for the rest of the 2004 season.

 

Artest would be the second player in the NBA to make an unusual name change as in 1981 Lloyd Bernard Free legally had his name changed to World B. Free, a nickname a friend had given him because of his 360-degree dunks and 44-inch vertical leaps.

 

In August 2008, Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson has his last name legally changed legally changed his last name to Ochocinco which means "eight five," his jersey number in Spanish.
