With a nine-game losing streak that has landed them in last place in the American League West, the Oakland Athletics fired manager Bob Geren on Thursday.

Former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin will take over the managerial duties for the rest of the season on an interim basis. In 1997, he led the Diamondbacks to the NL West title in addition to winning 93 games as a rookie manager with the Mariners in 2003.

This is the first midseason managerial change for the Athletics in 25 years when in 1986 they fired Jackie Moore after 73 games. Jeff Newman took over for 10 games on an interim basis before Tony LaRussa was brought in. LaRussa went on to win four division titles and the 1989 World Series championship.

Since taking over an AL West championship team from Ken Macha four years ago, Geren did not have a winning season and has a an overall record of 334-376. In addition to be in last place in the division, they are last in the American League in runs scored with 223 runs in the first 63 games.

This season the A’s are 27-36, eight games behind the division leading Texas Rangers in the Al West.

In recent weeks Geren has been under fire with the bullpen, most notably Huston Street, who publicly criticized him and the lack of communication with reliever Brian Fuentes.

Injuries to key players have not helped Geren, especially this season as the A’s have four starting pitchers on the disabled list, including Dallas Braden who is lost for the season with a shoulder injury. In addition, All-Star closer Andrew Bailey was out for the first two months of the season.
