Buster Posey Visits Giants Clubhouse
Written by Bob Whalon, Monday June 06 2011
Injured San Francisco catcher Buster Posey visited his Giants teammates in the clubhouse for the first time on Sunday afternoon.
Posey said that mentally he was "in a good place right now" after his ankle surgery. "It's something that I'll stay day-to-day with. That's what I'll try to do. Just get through one day. It's like playing baseball. Just stay in the moment as much as possible. It's going to be the same with the rehab process."
That rehab process will keep Posey out for the rest of the 2011 season after his collision at home plate with Florida Marlins reserve Scott Cousins. Posey broke a bone in his lower left leg and torn three ligaments in his ankle.
Posey was injured while trying to block the plate and Cousins barreled into him. Cousins has express remorse at the incident, but San Francisco general manager Brian Sabean didn't seem to accept the apology. Sabean hinted at retribution against Cousins in a tirade this week, before backing off his comments. Obviously he was told by Major League Baseball that his inflammatory comments were not acceptable.
Posey even felt compelled to speak on the controversy by condemning the death threats that Cousins has received from idiotic Giants fans. "I appreciate the continued support from Giants fans and others," Posey said in a statement on Saturday. "But in no way do I condone threats of any kind against Scott Cousins or his family. We all need to move on."
The injury has led to a nation-wide debate of whether MLB should change the rules to prevent collisions at home plate. Sabean and Giants manager Bruce Bochy, a former catcher himself, began the discussion because they lost their best player for the season. Fortunately there has been no indication from the commissioner's office that any rule change is coming.
