Pujols Hits Second Walk-off HR in a Row
Written by Nolan Thomas, Sunday June 05 2011
St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Albert Pujols has not had the type of year that was expected of him so far, but over the weekend against the Chicago Cubs he certainly got back on track after hitting two walk-off home runs in a row, both in extra innings.
On Saturday, Pujols had a drive off Jeff Samardzija in the 12th inning which gave the Cardinals a 5-4 victory and on Sunday he hit a drive in the 10th inning off Rodrigo Lopez for the 3-2 victory.
It gave the Card’s a three-game sweep of the struggling Cubs who have lost six in a row and nine of their last 11 games.
The Cardinals were trailing 2-1 in the ninth inning and down to their last strike before former Cub Ryan Theriot extended his hitting streak to 19 games with an RBI double off closer Carlos Marmol to tie the game and send it into extra innings.
After the game, Cubs starter Carlos Zambrano, who pitched an excellent seven innings, ripped his team by saying “We’re playing like a Triple-A team. This is embarrassing. Embarrassing for the team, for the owners. Embarrassing for the fans.”
