The Braves Might Hate To Leave May Behind
Written by Daniel Turner, Tuesday May 31 2011
Having amassed a 17-9 record in the month of May could leave the Braves wishing they didn’t have to turn the calendar. Especially since the month ends with them five games over .500 and trailing the Phils by 4.5.
Although they have yet to find an offensive weapon to replace sophomore sensation Justin Heyward they did see resurgence in Chipper Jones during the recently completed Reds series. However, the real star of the team so far has been starter Jair Jurrjens.
Jurrjens is making a serious bid for the Cy Young with a 7-1 record and a 1.51 ERA. His only loss was a game in which he gave up all of two runs. Having a solid bullpen, if the rest of the starters can come close to equaling Jurrjens the Braves could pull together an exciting stretch run.
Then, if rookie manager Fredi Gonzalez can guide the Braves to the playoffs he can avoid the scrutiny of being compared to the legendary Bobby Cox.
