Ohio State’s Jim Tressel Resigns
Ohio State football coach Jim Tressel resigned on Monday due to NCAA violations from a tattoo-parlor scandal, in which his players received improper benefits.
Tressel, who guided Ohio State to its first national title in 34 years, severely damaged the image of one of the country’s top football programs by knowing about the scandal and not reporting it to the NCAA.
The resignation comes almost three months after the school announced it suspended Tressel for two games, which was later increased to five games, as well as fining him $250,000 for knowing that his players received improper benefits from the tattoo-parlor owner.
Luke Fickell, who had already had been chosen to be the interim coach while Tressel served his five-game suspension, will take over as coach for the 2011 season.
Because of the circumstances surrounding Tressel’s resignation, Ohio State will not be required to pay him the remaining amount of his $3.5 million a year contract which was signed through the 2014 season.
