Bulls Center Joakim Noah Fined $50,000 for Gay Slur
Chicago Bulls center Joakim Noah was fined $50,000 by the NBA on Monday for using a derogatory anti-gay and offensive term from the bench towards a fan during Game 3 of the Eastern Conference finals in Miami.
Noah met with NBA Monday morning and he said that he was prepared to “pay the price” after the meeting.
The slur happened when he returned to the bench with two fouls midway through the first quarter of the game against the Miami Heat Sunday night.
“The fan said something that was disrespectful towards me,” Noah said. “And I went back at him. Got it on camera. I don’t want to hurt anybody’s feelings. Anybody who knows me knows that I’m not like that. I’m an open-minded guy. I said the wrong thing and I’m going to pay the consequences—deal with the consequences—like a man. I don’t want to be a distraction to the team right now.”
During the incident, Noah was captured by television cameras saying an expletive, followed by the anti-gay slur. Noah said he that he meant “no disrespect” to anyone.
