Sonnen Taps Out In California
Written by Daniel Turner, Thursday May 19 2011
On Thursday the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) voted 4-1 to uphold the indefinite suspension of UFC middleweight Chael Sonnen. They cited perjury as the cause for the indefinite suspension brought about by Sonnen testing positive for elevated testosterone levels. Sonnen’s test was conducted after his loss to Anderson Silva in UFC 117.
After the result was announced Sonnen claimed he suffers from hypogonadism and that he is receiving testosterone replacement therapy (TRT); a treatment that is allowed by MMA but banned by most major sports, including WWE.
The CSAC introduced past charges of money laundering against Sonnen that resulted in his being placed on probation and led to the loss of his real estate license. The introduction of these charges was allowed to substantiate Sonnen’s past record of lying under oath. They also noted that, although Sonnen told testers he has used certain prescription medicines and over the counter drugs, he did not mention TRT.
The earliest the 34 year old Sonnen can reapply for reinstatement with the CSAC is May of 2012.
