Reds Joey Votto NL MVP in Runaway
National League Central division winning Cincinnati Reds first baseman Joey Votto won the NL Most Valuable Player Award in a runaway in getting 31 of 32 votes by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
Votto batted .324 with 37 home runs and 113 RBI, finished in the top four in the NL in eight offensive categories and had the NL's highest on-base with .424 average and a .600 slugging percentage.
"I did some good things and, most importantly, we [as a team] won," Votto said. "I think those all together were the reason I won."
St Louis Cardinal first baseman Albert Pujols got the other vote. Colorado Rockies outfielder Carlos Gonzalez, Pujols, and Votto were the only players named on every ballot.
"It's pretty freaking awesome to have beaten Albert Pujols for the MVP," said Votto, who believes that Pujols is one of the greatest hitters in the history of baseball.
Pujols was going for his third consecutive MVP award and fourth in six years and batted .312 and led the league with 42 homers and 118 RBI. What might have hurt him this season is that the Cardinals finished five games back and did not make the playoffs.
Gonzalez won the NL batting crown with a .336 average. He also had 34 home runs and 117 RBI but the Rockies finished nine games back and in third place in the NL West.
Funny thing was that Votto was not considered good enough to make the All-Star Game and the only way he got in was because of the extra player fan vote on the internet.
