Trail Blazers Greg Oden will not play the season
Portland Trail Blazers center Greg will have micro fracture surgery on his left knee and will not play this season.
Oden, the former overall No. 1 draft pick has been marred by injuries during his short career so far.
He missed his rookie season because of micro fracture surgery on his right knee.
Oden has not played in a game since last December because he needed surgery for a fractured left patella after he broke his left kneecap during a game against the Houston Rockets.
Prior to the injury, he was averaging 11.7 points, 8.8 rebounds and 2.4 blocks as a starter.
The Blazers announced on Wednesday night that he is scheduled to have surgery this Friday to repair damaged cartilage and is unrelated to the patella injury from last season.
Oden has often been unfavorably compared to former Portland center Sam Bowie, whom the Blazers famously selected before Michael Jordan in the 1984 draft.
The Trail Blazers picked Oden instead of Kevin Durant, who was picked by the Oklahoma City Thunder and has become one of the NBA's best players.
It had been originally hoped that Oden would be able to play this season, but it was just not meant to be.
The former Ohio State star has played just 82 games in two seasons, averaging 9.4 points and 7.3 rebounds.
Oden will be a restricted free agent next summer and the team announced last month that they would not offer him a contract extension, although they will be able to match any other offers.
