Columnist Compares Buc's Josh Freeman to John Elway
According to Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports, after Buccaneers quarterback Josh Freeman led the team to a comeback victory over the Rams last Sunday, one Tampa columnist had the nerve to compare Freeman to John Elway, who made the fourth-quarter comeback a specialty.
Although Freeman’s stats at this point in his career could actually back up that statement as Elway had three fourth-quarter comebacks at the same time of his NFL career and Freeman already has five, the notion in itself is rather ridiculous.
Sure, the Buccaneers are 4-2, tied for the NFC South lead and on the right track, but there is no way that Freeman should be compared to John Elway this early in his career.
Freeman is playing very well right now but he needs to be more consistent throughout the whole game and not just play well in the fourth quarter with the game on the line to even be mentioned in the same breath as Elway.
Freeman has a tendency to hold onto the ball too long early in games waiting for the play to develop which has caused turnovers and the team to get behind in the first place.
In the fourth quarter, with the team in desperation mode, Freeman is getting rid of the ball quickly, not holding onto the ball too long and waiting for the play to develop.
Early in the game he is thinking too much, where as when the game in on the line, he is more successful because he just plays the game and does not think too much.
Maybe Freeman ought to play the whole game as if the team is down and the clock is running out.
Then, and only then, should he be mentioned in the same sentence as John Elway.
