Auburn No. 1 in the BCS Standings
Written by Bob Whalon, Sunday October 24 2010
The unbeaten Auburn Tigers (8-0) vaulted from fourth to first in the latest BCS standings after they defeated LSU 24-17 this weekend.
Oregon (7-0) remained in second place after crushing Pac-10 rival UCLA 60-13 and Boise State remained stuck in third place after being off this week. TCU (8-0) was fourth, Michigan State (8-0) fifth and Missouri (7-0) sixth.
Missouri jumped to sixth a day after knocking off the previous BCS No. 1 team, Oklahoma. The Sooners fell all the way to ninth after their 36-27 loss at Missouri on Saturday night.
Auburn is third in the USA Today coaches and Harris polls, but tops in the computer rankings. The polls count for two-thirds of a BCS average and a compilation of six computer ratings account for the rest.
Oregon's No. 8 computer rating was far behind most of the other top teams, but the Ducks are a ranked No. 1 in the polls. Boise State is No. 2 in the polls, but rated only No. 6 by the computers.
Boise State from the WAC and TCU from the Mountain West are both trying to become the first teams from conferences without automatic bids to play in the BCS championship game. In order for that to happen they will have to go undefeated and have Auburn and Oregon lose. Even if that happens, they could still be passed in the standings by Michigan State and Missouri if they go undefeated.
Auburn is trying to become the fifth straight SEC school to win the BCS championship. In the last four years Florida has twice and Alabama and LSU have each won once.
