Carmelo Anthony Never Asked to be Traded
Written by Bob Whalon, Monday September 27 2010
Carmelo Anthony showed up at media day wearing a Denver Nuggets jersey. How long he'll be wearing that jersey is the hottest topic in the NBA right now.
"I'm here today, whatever the future holds, it holds," Anthony said on Monday. "I'm leaving my options open right now. At the end of the season, I'll sit down with my team, I'll sit down with the Nuggets, and we'll talk about it. This has been a long summer. I'm just excited to be back on the court."
However, sources with knowledge of Anthony's thinking said that one option he has considered this week is not reporting to Nuggets camp if he is not traded by Monday, despite the fact that a holdout of any length would put him at risk for stiff discipline from the league office and make things even more uncomfortable for him in Denver if the Nuggets decide to keep him.
The Nuggets have reportedly been involved in trade talks with several teams regarding Anthony. But he claims it wasn't his idea. "I've never said I wanted to be traded. I never once said anything about trade talk," Anthony said.
The reason for the trade talk is due to the fact that Anthony turned down a three-year, $65 million extension in June.
A potential four team mega deal involving New Jersey, Charlotte and Utah fell apart over the weekend. The deal was said to bring the Nuggets Nets rookie Derrick Favors, Jazz veteran Andrei Kirilenko and two future first round draft picks in return for Anthony, with the Nets also sending point guard Devon Harris to Charlotte and Utah acquiring veteran forward Boris Diaw from the Bobcats.
Meanwhile, the Nuggets commenced talks with the Philadelphia 76ers about a trade for Anthony involving swingman Andre Iguodla, according to reports. That's despite the fact that the Sixers have reportedly been told that Anthony is not prepared to sign a contract extension if he is traded to Philadelphia. However, it is widely assumed that he would be willing to sign an extension with the Nets. Anthony can become a free agent on July 1, 2011.
Sources say that the Nets believe that the deal will still happen at some point, but general manager Billy King isn't tipping his hand. "I would say that we're exploring everything," King said. "But there's no deal. we have nothing. We'll continue to explore and see if we can make the team better. At this point I'm excited about watching our guys practice."
At this point everyone is waiting on Denver to see if they will trade Carmelo Anthony.
