Outdoor Sports: Gone Fishing For Summer
Winter is rearing its enormous head in the U.S. New England has been slammed and it is been below freezing in Seattle since December 13. My old bones are aching and we haven’t even hit the shortest day of the year. That’s why I’m saying take me fishing, to Australia.
It is approaching summer in the Land Down Under. Spring is in bloom and the big fish are biting. There are as many tours hitting the waters around Australia as there are types of fish to be snagged. The economy may be in the toilet, but dreaming is free and, if you can afford a trip to the island continent, then this may be the kick start you need.
Kingfisher Tours operates out of Sydney. They don’t supply the specs on the boat pictured on their home page, but it’s a beauty and it is available seven days a week. They only run full boat charters, so you’ll have to talk everyone you know into the trip. Wait until it is the third day of below freezing temps and then start a subtle campaign. You can ramp it up as the mercury drops.
The Kingfisher offers reef and bottom fishing in both morning and twilight hours. This offers the opportunity to relax, enjoy the scenery and catch some fine table fish. They recommend this trip for the less than fanatical fishers since it offers the chance to chill and fish. This trip is heavier on the social part of the event.
For the serious angler there is the light game and deep reef fishing. This is the one for the sports person who will take in the sights when the boat docks. The maximum is 10 anglers and the route includes 12 Mile Reef and similar spots. The catch here includes snapper, kingfish and long fin perch. As with all of the trips, bait, tackle and an able body crew for assistance are included.
It is usually only run on mid-week, but a deep water trip is available that handles 6 anglers. Fish vary according to season.
If you are looking for marlin and tuna than the Wright 1 Fishing Charter is for you. They get you to where the marlin, tuna, shark, game fish and reel fish are biting. The ride includes a twin 300 hp Detroit turbo and they claim the deep throb of the big motors when at trolling speed attracts the attention of billfish.
These guys are hardcore and offer all weather, all conditions trips. Socializing isn’t the priority with Wright 1. They offer Shimano and Daiwa rods, Shimano and Penn reels and Pakula lures. They are bait rigging experts varying what they use depending on conditions, water color, the season, the current and the target fish.
They specialize in big game fishing and advertise that a relaxing day on the water is a bad one. They want you to have an adrenaline fueled day of battling large fish for hours on end. So, if feeling the pull of a marlin that has the power of a freight train beats shoveling the driveway, you may want to see what’s available in your bank account and make your way to Australia. Don’t worry, winter will be here when you return and if you want to get in touch with Jack Frost, you can always go ice fishing in Wisconsin.
