Spotlight on my Breezy: Adrian Purnell
Written by Carie Small, Friday September 24 2010
As a rookie on Tampa Breeze, Adrian will be starting middle linebacker so I thought I would give everyone a little insight on exactly who is this new girl we call "Mike"
Born in San Antonio, TX but raised in Tampa, Adrian was back in Texas at the time that she first heard about the LFL. She was extremely disappointed to learn that Houston wasn't one of the cities hosting a team but that disappointment turned to hope and motivation when she moved back to Tampa in April and by chance, began working out at the same gym where Coach Yo trains.
Working hard to succeed in sports is nothing new for Adrian. She cheered from ages 7-18 and in high school was a star on the track team. Although, her passion for football cut her track career short. Her senior year of high school, she quit track to play flag football. Where she earned the spot of starting QB and won the MVP award for the season.
That's where it all began. Now, playing on the other side of the ball, Adrian will start her first professional football game tonight. I can't wait to see her play!!!
The hard working Hooters girl who hopes to someday own her own clothing boutique has football on the brain ALL the time and her work ethic fits right in with our highly favored team, "I love being a part of Tampa Breeze because they made me earn my spot, nothing was given to me. I realized quickly this wasn't a slumber party, it was a team that wanted to WIN...and that's what I'm all about, WINNING."
At the beginning of the season, although Adrian was speedy and aggressive on the field, she was rather shy. All that has disappeared as she was recently nicknamed "The Mouth Of The South" for her vocal leadership on the field. It's that leadership and intensity that I think will be noticed when she takes the field this season. I know it impresses me every practice. For a rookie to bring that kind of spirit and intensity to a defense that already holds last seasons league Defensive Player of the Year is a big deal. As her teammate (and her veteran "buddy"), I am very proud!!
I asked Adrian how it felt to be a rookie on a team with so many returning vets and All-Fantasy players, she said she has learned SO much from the vets, "aside from the important assignments, I've learned that aggression will take you very far on this team and in the league" She also said that we're not letting her slack off either :) "To be a rookie on the Breeze you have to learn to make the vets respect you, so you have to ball out at ALL TIMES and never fall off track because they WILL bring it to your attention." (good job us!!)
#4 Ashley Thunder, starting Safety, says, "I am so proud of her progress. Adrian's energy on the field spreads like wild fire! She has not only earned her spot but proven that she will be an essential part of Tampa Breeze's success"
Well, Adrian, you've earned our respect. When we're on the field we know that when we look to Mike, you're going to tell us what defense we're running. We know when we get tired, you're going to keep us going. We know you're going to talk talk talk and back it right up with hard hits. We know that the center on the other team better keep her head in the game if she wants to keep it on her shoulders. We love you, and we CAN'T WAIT to smack your helmet for a game well played!!!!
Tampa Breeze plays TONIGHT against Orlando Fantasy in the new UCF Arena. We hope to see you there. The weather forecast calls for a STRONG BREEZE, so come prepared. And BEWARE OF DOGS!
xo,
#17
