Ravens Ray Lewis: “I get tired of whining about quarterbacks”

Ravens star middle linebacker Ray Lewis has a point, quarterbacks in the NFL are way too protected and it is taking away from the game and how it is played.

It all started after yesterdays game between the Ravens and the Bengals in which two bad calls in protecting the quarterbacks changed the outcome of a game.

The first call was a tripping penalty on Lewis. It is clear in the replays that Lewis was blocked into the quarterback and that it should not have been a penalty.

However, the biggest farce recently in the NFL is the roughing the passer call.

First of all I would like to say that quarterbacks are usually one of the highest paid positions in the league and that I believe that they are way overprotected in this age of football.

It is getting to the point where quarterbacks will soon be wearing flags and will not be allowed to be tackled at all. Those red practice jerseys will be the norm for every NFL game if things continue they way they are now.

Ok back to the game at hand that started this rant in the first place.

Ravens defensive end Terrell Suggs broke off his block grabbed Bengals quarterback Carson Palmer while he still had the ball and he was in the process of getting the ball out as Suggs started to take him to the ground.

He was flagged for roughing the passer for “slamming the quarterback to the ground”.

To me, slamming a quarterback to the ground would be to actually pick him up and then body slam him into the ground which should be penalty.

However, all Suggs did was complete the tackle. He was already in the process of tackling Palmer when he threw the ball, how the heck is Suggs supposed to stop his tackle in midstream?

I also do not believe that a defensive player just touching a quarterbacks helmet with his hand during a play should be a roughing the passer penalty either. These guys are flying around trying to get to the quarterback and they are taught to raise their hands in order to attempt to knock down the pass and their forward motion causes their hand to hit the helmet.

If it was a flagrant hit to the head that is one thing, but unintentional and slightly touching the helmet is a ridiculous penalty.

There are just too many instances where a defensive player is going full speed and hits the quarterback only one or two steps after he releases the ball which are called a penalty.

How the heck are they supposed to stop?

It’s to the point where defensive players are hesitant to hit the quarterback at all because of a penalty and the ensuing fine that the NFL will slap on them because of it.

The NFL and quarterbacks need to take off their skirts and get back in the game.
