Bettman fines Devils for Kovalchuk deal
Written by Heidi Pope Werner, Monday September 13 2010
After signing off on the most recent contract deal for winger Illya Kovalchuk, NHL's commissioner, Gary Bettman, fined the New Jersey Devils $3 million. The New Jersey Devils will also lose a first round pick in the next four Entry Drafts as well as their third-round draft pick in 2011. The Devils will determine in which year between 2011 and 2014 they give up their first-round pick.
An aribtrator ruled the Kovalchuk contract violated the salary cap cirumvention in place, therefore, citing the Devils with the fine and draft picks. The Devils current salary cap will not be affected. The NHL claims the violation of the terms of the CBA consitutes the discipline.
New Jersey's GM, Lou Lamoriello released a statement:
“We were today advised of the ruling by the Commissioner with respect to the Kovalchuk matter. We disagree with the decision. We acted in good faith and did nothing wrong. We will have no further comment.”
On Aug. 27, a 10-year, $100-million contract was submitted, and through negotiations between the league and the NHLPA, finally approved on Sept. 4.
