NL West-Leading Padres Lose 10th in a Row

Even though the San Diego Padres lost their 10th straight game on Sunday to the Colorado Rockies 4-2, they still lead the National League West by two games over the San Francisco Giants.

The Padres have led the division practically the entire season, but have seen their season-high 6 1/2 game lead on Aug. 25 dwindle rapidly.  "We have a sense of urgency right now," Padres pitcher Clayton Richard said.  "We have a special opportunity and we are going to do everything in our control to take advantage of it."

The three game sweep of the Padres pulled the Rockies to within 4 1/2 games of the division lead and to within 5 1/2 games of the Wild Card leading Philadelphia Phillies.  The Rockies have not been this close to first place since July 23.

San Diego has not won since a 9-3 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Aug. 25.  Since then the team has been swept by the Phillies, the Diamondbacks and the Rockies and have been outscored 55-23.

"We're in games but we're not generating the big hit, not generating the offense to get us over the top," San Diego manager Bud Black said.  "We have to turn this around."

The losing streak is starting to take on historical dimensions.  The streak is San Diego's longest since a franchise record 13-game skid in May 1994.  Plus, only two teams MLB history, the 1951 New York Giants and 1982 Atlanta Braves, have made the postseason during a year in which they had a losing streak of at least 10 games.

"I don't think we can be too hard on ourselves," the Padres Miguel Tejada said.  "We just have to keep playing hard and we have to be positive.  We're still in first place."

That's true, but they won't be in first place for long if they don't end this losing streak soon.
