Storm Beat Defending Champs at Home
Written by Daniel Turner, Sunday September 05 2010
The Phoenix Mercury have not displayed their championship caliber this season, but they did enough to make the playoffs and appeared to be heading back to Seattle to play a third and deciding game against the Storm in the WNBA Western Conference Finals. That was before the Storm went on a 15-0 run in the final minutes that were punctuated by the game winning three pointer from Sue Bird with 2.8 seconds left.
Bird appeared tired throughout the second half and missed easier three point shots than the one she dropped to end the Mercury season. She can rest now as the Strom will not open the WNBA Final series until next Sunday. Since the Eastern Conference Finals are being decided tonight they do not know yet if they will play New York or Atlanta.
The only certainty was that they did not want to risk a deciding game against Phoenix. Lauren Jackson began their 4th period surge that ended with the dagger shot from Bird. Phoenix ended the season going 0-7 against Seattle, including the two conference final games.
