Kovalchuk deal approved by NHL
Written by Heidi Pope Werner, Friday September 03 2010
The NHL and NHL Players' Association will allow Ilya Kovachuk to play with the New Jersey Devils. Both sides will need to sign off on a deal before 5 p.m. today.
Kovalchuk's $100-million, 15-year contract was the second proposal for the Russian winger to play in the NHL. Previously, a $102-million, 17-year was rejected in violation of the league’s salary cap.
A September 8 Russian league deadline and NHL contract negotiations kept Kovalchuk waiting for a solid job offer. In July, reports surfaced that KHL’s franchise SKA St. Petersburg was interested in signing the league’s leading goal scorer since 2001.
The Devils anticipate the 10 goals and 17 assists with the team last season, after a trade mid-season, will jump considerably. Despite breaking into the playoffs last season, the Devils exited in the first round. Signing a dominant scorer is one step closer for New Jersey’s hunt for the Stanley Cup.
