Start of September In MLB
Written by Christopher Corazon, Wednesday September 01 2010
The calendar turned to September. While some teams are preparing for meaningful October baseball, others are just playing out the string. Here's a look at August:
The Reds finished August with a 19-8 record, the best in MLB. They have opened up a 7 game lead over the Cardinals. The Cardinals swept the Reds in a series that ended August 11, but since then, St. Louis has lost series against mediocre or bad teams. They ended the month shut out in back to back games against the Astros.
The Padres are probably glad August is over, they ended the month losing six in a row. But the they still have a four game lead over the Giants, and lead by five games in the all important loss column.
In the American league, Buck Showalter took over the Orioles and the team went 17-10. It would not even come close to bringing the Orioles back, they were the first team to be eliminated from every race. But it did help the O's in passing the ghost of the 1988 Orioles team that has the worst record in modern Oriole history.
The AL East still has the two teams with the best records in baseball, the Yankees and the Rays. They recently spent eight days tied at the top of the standings, the longest two teams have been tied this late in the season. However, the attention is lost on that race because both teams will be in the playoffs, they are simply playing for home field advantage.
