NHL reviews new 15-year deal for Kovalchuk

The New Jersey Devils have presented a new contract for approval granting Illya Kovalchuk a deal spanning 15 years worth $100 million. Previously, the NHL refused a 17-year, $102 million contract for Kovalchuk due to violations of the salary cap.
“It’s just waiting for the league to give, hopefully, their approval,” GM Lou Lamoriello said Friday.
A new deal would pay the left-winger approximately $6.6 million the first year. New Jersey Devils fans are hoping the contract stands as Kovalchuk had 41 goals and 44 assists last season and could get the Devils closer to the Stanley Cup. With 338 goals and 304 assists in 642 career games, the 27-year-old Russian expects a quick decision as rumors imply he could play in the KHL if the NHL does not accept the new offer within five days.
