The Orioles Sweep the Angels

The Orioles completed a three game sweep over Angels.  They beat the Angels Sunday 1-0.  Jeremy Guthrie started for the Orioles and struck out the side in the first.  He attempted to pitch the complete game but only lasted one out in the ninth.  The Angels got the tying run to third but were unable to push that run across the plate.

The Orioles won all three in Los Angeles for the first time since 1999.  It's the first time a team has swept the Angels for a season since the Royals went 6-0 against the Angels in 1981.  The Red Sox won their first nine games against the Angels this year but lost their tenth and final game.

In the bigger picture, the Orioles are playing much better since manager Buck Showaltertook over.  It may be in part due to the return of players like Brian Roberts.  or It may be that players knew that Dave Tremblay was a lame duck and the Jerry Manuel was an interim manager.  Now the Orioles know that Showalter is here to stay.

The Orioles are playing better but it might not make a difference in next years standings.  Looking up in the division, the Blue Jays are the best fourth place in baseball and have hit more home runs than any other team.  The Red Sox and Yankees are among the league leaders year in and year out.  The Rays may lose some key free agents but they have a very strong farm system.  Their AAA team the Durham Bulls won the Southern Division in the International League for the fourth year in a row.
