For a team that has been called not big enough, old enough, or not good enough, Team USA made a statement on Saturday with an opening round 106-78 victory over Croatia in the World Championships in Istanbul Turkey.

Regardless of what some are saying, this team believes in themselves and thinks that they have the talent and the ability to end a 16-year world championship drought for the USA and they took their first step towards that goal with the victory over Croatia.

The U.S. has won the World Championships just three times, and has not won since 1994.

Eric Gordon made four three-pointers and had 16 points to lead the Americans, followed by Kevin Durant who scored 14 points and Chauncey Billups with 12 points, and all 12 USA players scored.

Team USA blew the game open in the second quarter by holding the Croatians to only six points and they led 47-26 with 1:48 to go in the half.

Because of the big lead, Coach Mike Krzyzewski was able to give his starters plenty of rest in the second half. This will be important as they have their most challenging games in the first three days of the tournament.

Bojan Bogdanovic scored 17 points and Marko Popovic had 16 for Croatia.

Croatia was just 3 of 17 from the field and missed 12 of its 13 three-point attempts in the half.

The U.S. faces Slovenia on Sunday and play against Brazil on Monday.
