Chiefs Glad to Have Dilemma at Running Back
Written by Travis Pulver, Thursday August 26 2010
The Kansas City Chiefs have been somewhat offensively challenged over the last few seasons, but appear to have a dilemma taking shape in their backfield—too much talent.
Last season Jamaal Charles was voted the MVP of the team by his teammates after rushing for nearly 1000 yards in the last eight games of the season. He also became the first back in the NFL to rush for 1000 yards with less than 200 carries.
Even with the emergence of Charles, the Chiefs signed free agent veteran running back Thomas Jones after he was released by the New York Jets who felt that Shonn Greene is ready to shoulder the load. Jones had led the NFL’s No. 1 rushing attack in New York with 1402 yards for his fifth consecutive 1000+ yard season.
With two talented and capable backs head coach Todd Haley has a dilemma; with two quality backs, who plays?
"Whoever we start, I think it's less significant than people are going to try to make it," Haley says. "We're going to play the guy that within each series of downs and every down ... is doing the things that give us a chance to win." (USAToday)
So far in two preseason contests Charles has been the better of the two backs rushing nine times for 63 yards while Jones has only gained 31 yards on 10 carries and lost one fumble.
The Chiefs face off with the Philadelphia Eagles in their third preseason game on Friday at Arrowhead Stadium.
