NFL Owners agree to 18 Game Seasons
According to an Associated Press report, NFL owners agreed during a five hour meeting at a hotel in
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made the point that under the current collective bargaining agreement, the NFL has the right to increase regular season games and still keep four preseason games as well, although most of the owners want to keep the season to 20 weeks with only two preseason games.
However, the current CBA expires after this season, and there is no doubt that the expanded game schedule will be a huge issue in talks on the new agreement.
"We want to do it the right way for everyone, including the players, the fans and the game in general," Goodell said. "There's a tremendous amount of momentum for it. We think it's the right step."
When to start the season, roster expansion, off-season and training camp changes still are issues that need to be resolved.
The players still have a lot of doubts and wonder how it is going to affect their paychecks.
Many players wonder how smart it is to expand an already taxing season and make it even longer. At the very least, the players are going to want to be further compensated for the two extra games, as well as have the rules concerning injured players and maybe adding another bye week looked into.

Of course the players care about how much of the league's revenue they're getting. They're doing the heavy lifting. If you're being asked to do more at work, wouldn't you ask for a raise? To me it's the owners that are money hungry to want 18 games because many fans don't want to pay full price for preseason games. But at the same time, with more games, won't that lead to more end of season games that mean nothing with the stars sitting out a majority of the contest? The owners wouldn't care because those games would already be sold out.

The players only care about how much bigger a percentage of the league's revenue they'll get from more games. I just hope they don't start the season earlier. They tried having games on Labor Day weekend before and the ratings were a record low.
