Running game still in doubt for Houston Texans
The Houston Texans had one major goal coming into this season that needed to be addressed if the team was going to improve off their first winning season in franchise history and challenge for a playoff spot. They had to establish a running game.
New offensive coordinator Greg Knapp replaced the departed Kyle Shanahan. In three seasons in Atlanta, the Falcons had the No. 1 rushing game in the league.
Prior to their pre-season match-up against the Arizona Cardinals Saturday they had high hopes that they may finally have the tools in place to do just that. After the game their options have slimmed down.
Against the Cardinals Foster did not play much, but he did rip off a 21-yard carry the first time he got his hands on the ball. Slaton damaged his standing after a dreadful performance, gaining only 22 yards on 10 carries and losing a fumble on the goal line. Ben Tate is likely done for the season after suffering a severe ankle injury. Head coach Gary Kubiak commented Sunday on Tate’s injury:
"He obviously has a very significant ankle injury…It's still under evaluation at this point. I know that it's going to require surgery…Doesn't look good. That's the best I can describe it for now." (NFL)
No matter who the Texans had in the game they still suffered the same red zone issues that they had last season. In four trips inside the red zone, where a solid running game comes in handy, the Texans were only able to come away with three field goals.
