Urban Meyer wants Rule Breaking Agents and Players to be Punished

Florida coach Urban Meyer thinks that agents that break the rules should be punished for not following the rules and having improper contact with college players.

Meyer believes that the players who break the rules should be punished as well.

"You want to stop some kind of unethical, illegal activity? How do you do it? You punish them. The players get punished and you want to stop the other side, too," Meyer said. "It's almost like in recruiting: If there's no threat of a punishment, go have at it." CBSSports.com

Meyer said Friday that mandating harsh penalties for agents and players who break the rules would be a major step toward eliminating the kind of unscrupulous contact that has plagued college football in recent months.

Yesterday, Alabama coach Nick Saban, another college coach who has a known disdain for agents, had a conference call with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell, the NFL Players Association, fellow coaches and a handful of athletic directors and agents.

On the call they talked about the problems with agents and the issues that led to several colleges being investigated this summer.

The NCAA has investigated alleged improper agent contact at Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina and North Carolina and Southern California was punished by the NCAA for similar behavior.

Meyer, Ohio State's Jim Tressel, Oklahoma's Bob Stoops and Texas' Mack Brown were also on the call.

Some of the coaches want NFL players that broke the rules in college to be punished by the NFL or the NFLPA. I doubt that will ever happen.
