Chargers Lose a Big Part of Their Past
Written by Daniel Turner, Friday August 06 2010
It has been reported on the San Diego Chargers website that former sack specialist Gary “Big Hands” Johnson passed away Wednesday in Shreveport, LA. Johnson had suffered a stroke five days earlier. He was 57 years old.
Johnson earned All Rookie Honors, was elected to the Pro Bowl four times and is a member of the Chargers Hall of Fame. In 1980 he teamed with Fred Dean and Louie Kelcher to lead the NFL with 60 sacks. The trio became known as the Bruise Brothers.
Johnson won a Super Bowl with the San Francisco 49ers in 1984. He also helped the Chargers make the playoffs from 1979-82.
