Angels Torii Hunter Moves to the Right
Written by Daniel Turner, Wednesday August 04 2010
Last night Torii Hunter did something he hasn’t done since October 3, 1999; he played a position other than center field. Yes, Hunter perennial All Star and nine time consecutive Gold Glove winner moved to right field for, what according to manager Mike Scioscia, will be his permanent position. The Angels want to get rookie Peter Bourjos in the lineup and center field is his natural position. Therefore, Hunter will now patrol the area previously manned by Bobby Abreu while number 53 moves to left field.
Hunter acquitted himself well at his new spot by gunning down Matt Wieters at home plate in the eighth inning. So, while he says he will need time to adjust, it appears that his skills translate well from center to right.
Hunter’s willingness to make the move is indicative of his desire to win and to keep cohesion in the club house. As he stated, “Sometimes you have to slap pride in the face.” Basically Hunter places winning and getting something he doesn’t have, a World Series ring, over sulking about changing positions.
