Orioles Fall Behind 1988 Pace
Written by Christopher Corazon, Wednesday July 28 2010
Toronto beat Baltimore 8-2 last night in the 100th game of the season. The loss gives the Orioles a record of 31-69. This puts them one game behind the 1988 pace.
The 1988 Orioles had the worst record that Baltimore has had in the modern era. They started the season 0-21 and it led to the firing of Cal Ripken, Sr. after just six games. After 100 games, that team was 32-68, and finished the season with a 54-107 record. Their best month was August, when the team almost played .500 baseball. They finished the month with a 14-15 record.
The current Orioles will have to get hot to keep pace with the ’88 club. To finish ahead, they will have to win 24, and only lose 38 games. That would be a .387 percentage, they are currently playing at a .310 clip. Also, that ’88 team had that productive August, and only played 13 games against teams in their division. This O’s team must play 18 against the Yankees, Red Sox, and Rays. Even the Blue Jays in fourth are more than 20 games in front of the lowly O’s.

At least their losing record streak is not as bad as the pathetic Pirates... a long way from 1979...
