The Long and Short of Surfing

Seven years ago Cori Schumacher grew tired of competitive surfing. She likened getting up every morning to practice to going to work in a factory. Consequently she put her short board away and retired from the sport.

However, still loving the water and the fun of surfing Schumacher turned to a long board. While the ride that is the source of derision for so many surfers seemed an unlikely choice at the time, today Schumacher is fresh off of winning her third Long Board World Championship. This has her standing alone on a board that she has used to create an art form she found lacking when she gave up on short board surfing.

Schumacher surpassed both Daize Shayne-Goodwin and Jennifer Smith who hold two world titles each. She entered the competition held last week in Biarritz, France with the simple goal of making it to the second heat. Obviously she accomplished much more than that.

Now she hopes that her three titles will help convince other surfers that long board surfing has the same status as short board.  No question that in her mind the long board rules. And, with three titles, so does Cori Schumacher.
