Matt Garza pitched the first no-hitter in Tampa Bay Rays history and the fifth in the major leagues this season on Monday night and the Rays beat the Detroit Tigers 5-0.

Garza faced the minimum 27 batters, allowing only a second-inning walk.

The Rays have been on the other end of a few pitching gems this season, so it was nice to see one of their pitchers pitch a gem himself.

The Rays have been held hitless three times since last July, including two perfect games that were thrown against them.

The last time there were at least five no-hitters in a season was in 1991, when Hall of Famer Nolan Ryan threw one of the seven no-hitters in the big leagues that year.

Garza, the 2008 AL championship series MVP, rebounded from one of his worst outings of the season. He retired pinch-hitter Ramon Santiago for the final out on an easy fly ball to right fielder Ben Zobrist, who made a terrific running catch earlier in the game.

Garza's teammates naturally mobbed him near the mound after the final out.

Only two teams in major league baseball history have never had a no-hitter, the New York Mets and the San Diego Padres.

Garza joins these other pitchers in throwing no-hitters this season.

May 9 -- Dallas Braden, Oakland vs. Tampa Bay, 4-0- perfect game
June 26 -- Edwin Jackson, Arizona at Tampa Bay, 1-0
May 29 -- Roy Halladay, Philadelphia at Florida, 1-0- perfect game
April 17 -- Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado at Atlanta, 4-0

Of course there should be a sixth no hitter and third perfect game this year that wasn’t due to a bad call.
