The Los Angeles Angels acquired pitcher Dan Haren from the Arizona Diamondbacks Sunday in exchange for pitcher Joe Saunders, two minor league pitchers and a player to be named later.

Haren was one of the most prized pitchers available on the trade market.  The three-time all-star has averaged 15 wins over the past five seasons and was tied for the NL lead with 141 strikeouts.  He also has allowed more hits (161) than any other pitcher in the NL and has allowed the second most homeruns (23) in MLB.

"We feel real good about our starting five moving forward," Angeles manager Mike Scioscia said.  "This is a huge opportunity for us to upgrade not only now, but for the next couple of years.  He's definitely a guy who has pitched in big games, has terrific stuff and he's a young veteran."

Haren, 29, is due to make $12.75 million each of the next two seasons with a club option for $15.5 million in 2013.

Haren is 7-8 with a 4.60 ERA.  The Angeles think that a change of scenery to a contending team might help him regain his focus.

In exchange for Haren, the Diamondbacks got Saunders, 29, who is 6-10 with a 4.62 ERA in 20 starts.  The Diamondbacks also receive reliever Rafael Rodriguez who has been up and down with the Angels, pitching 32 2/3 innings over the last two years, and 21-year-old left-hander Patrick Corbin, a second round pick in 2009, who was in Class A Rancho Cucamonga.  Corbin is projected as a No. 3 or 4 starter in a few years.  The Arizona Republic is reporting that the player to be named later is Class A left-hander Tyler Skaggs.

The Angels are six games behind the Texas Rangers in the standings and felt that they needed to counter the high-profile trade that the Rangers made for Cliff Lee on July 9.
