Isner Works Faster in the Heat
Written by Daniel Turner, Friday July 23 2010
John Isner moved into the semifinals of the Atlanta Tennis Championship today by steamrolling Michael Russell. With the on court temperature registering 120 degrees, Isner has no intention of duplicating his Wimbledon match with Nicolas Mahut, so he disposed of his opponent in 56 minutes winning in straight sets 6-1, 6-2.
Isner broke Russell in the first game of the second set and managed to drop just two points on serve during the first set. At 6’9”, Isner powered over the 5’8” Russell forcing him to toe the baseline in an effort to remove angles on serve. The strategy proved fruitless as Russell managed only three points on Isner’s first serve in the course of the match. Isner’s serve was far from his only weapon as he used aggressive returns and a wicked forehand from the baseline to overwhelm Russell.
Isner will now face Kevin Anderson who has reached the second ATP semi of his career with a win over Lukas Lacko. Anderson better hope that either the temperature, or Isner, cools off by match time.
