2011 NFL Lockout inevitable, Collinsworth says Players will go broke
With the NFL collective bargaining agreement going nowhere, a lockout for the 2011 season looks inevitable at this point. Both sides are being stubborn and seem to be unwilling to compromise on the situations at hand.
"The owners want a billion dollars back from the players. They want to do that and still want to not give us the financial information that everybody would want," NFL Players' Association Executive Director DeMaurice Smith said.
Former NFL wide receiver and current NFL analyst Cris Collinsworth appeared on The Dan Patrick Show, and talked about the upcoming 2010 season and the possibility there will not be NFL football in 2011.
While he was a player, Collinsworth was part of two players’ strikes during his NFL career. The key word here is “players strikes” as he was involved in strikes that were decided by the players. If there is a lockout in 2011, it will not be the choice of the players; it would be an owner’s lockout and the choice of the owners. It is the owners who are unhappy with the current collective bargaining agreement.
"They're shutting down the game so they can get a better CBA,” Collinswoirth said.
Collinsworth went on to say that if there is a lockout, the players still have more to lose in the short term then the owners do.
The players will run out of money and the owners will be paid," Collinsworth said. "In that scenario I can't imagine a way where the owners won't come out ahead in this one."
Even though players in today’s game get paid a lot more money than they did when Collinsworth played, he is convinced that many of the players would go broke if they missed a significant portion of the season.
NFLPA head DeMaurice Smith also stressed financial and benefits problems that his players would face if there was an owner lockout.
The real test for the union will come closer to week one of the 2011 season when regular player paychecks are scheduled to show up.
