Commitment. Responsibility. TEAM.

The end of July... the time that professional football players across America re-unite and begin working together, preparing for the new season.  Tampa Breeze reports to training camp tomorrow. What to expect?  A large group of rookies and 12 vets coming together every day for intense workouts, physical training and mental preparation.

The coaches who have already spent many hours preparing, will be putting in long hours viewing tapes and taking notes.

The end results?

A roster of 20, the 20 who are committed to keeping it tight and getting it right, the 20 who will work together.

A combination of Bigs and Skills that will work harder than the other team. Not until the final whistle blows at the end of each practice or each game…until the final whistle blows in the Lingerie Bowl in Vegas next February.

Last night I received an email from a young lady who is interested in attending next weeks last open tryout of the season. One last hour next Saturday that a woman can come out and showcase her skills in hopes of joining Tampa Breeze’s training camp with a chance to make it to the final 20, a chance to be one of the 200 women who will play in the 2010/2011 season of the prestigious Lingerie Football League.

She was asking me what kind of commitment to expect if you are involved with the league. I responded to her email, of course, but that made me think that many people may not know exactly how much time we put in and what a huge responsibility it is.

If you make an LFL team, Congratulations! You got a new job. You’re now a professional football player. You’re a member of a team.  Your job far exceeds showing up at practice (which is at least twice a week during pre-season, three times a week within a month of your first game and a daily commitment once your season kicks off).

You have a responsibility to your team to stay in tip-top shape, you not only need to work out and eat healthy to look good in your uniform, (a little more than what a pro beach volleyball player wears but less than anything you ever wore playing sports in college,) but your physical condition and health are also important to keep up strength because football is a sport in which every player needs to do her job and do it well or her teammates will get hurt.

In addition to the commitment on the field, LFL players make appearances at local events promoting their team. They wake up early in the morning to be guests on radio shows. They stay up late being the guest bartenders at charity events. They’re fixtures in the community

These are things that you are expected to do on top of the life that you had before you played football. All LFL players also have other careers and focuses in their life.  Among the Tampa Breeze we have business owners, paralegals, nurses, engineers, students, models, actresses, mothers, real estate agents …just to name a few.

We work long days, drive long distances to practices and we do it because we love the sport. We love being a part of a team. We love competition.  And we love each other.

Being awarded a roster spot on an LFL team is a huge privilege, a huge commitment and a huge responsibility.

Contrary to popular belief, there IS an “I” in team… it’s the same “I” that appears four times within the words commitment and responsibility.

And to the women attending the last tryout next weekend, GOOD LUCK!! Be early, be prepared, be confident and have fun!! http://www.lflus.com/camps/

To my Tampa Breeze teammates and potential rookies, get lots of rest and hydrate... I can't wait to see you tomorrow!!! Shout out to the Bigs!! ;)

Nice first blog post! I'm looking forward to more of your work, Ms. Small. You have a very entertaining writing style that is uniquely you, and I'm curious to see with what you follow this. I'm hoping you can find the time to bust out a new column a month (at least) until you run out of ideas. :)
