Midsummer Softball Classic
Written by Christopher Corazon, Tuesday July 13 2010
In the old days, there used to be old timer’s games. These days, you can still see the old stars in the Taco Bell Legends and Celebrity softball game. It’s one thing when you see the beer belly growing in the mirror. It’s another thing when you see it growing on the stars you once knew.
The National League did not score in the top of the first. In the bottom half of the inning, Jenny Finch threw a windmill fastball to Ricky Henderson for the first pitch. Henderson hit the next pitch for a leadoff home run as he did many times in his career. Tim Salmon returned to Anaheim with a three run home run, and MC Hammer made it hammer time going back to back to give the AL a five run lead.
John Kruk was managing the NL squad, and he said that he “learned from Larry Bowa how to be positively negative”. It worked for a while. The NL got two runs in the top of the second, then added four more in the third, capped off by a three run homer by Finch. After the Finch shot, actor Michael Clarke Duncan reminded all the following batters that Finch homered. Duncan told Gary Carter “You better get one….Finch got one….” Later, he said to Mike Piazza “Jenny Finch. What are you waiting for Mike? Jenny Finch.” Duncan taunted Dave Winfield with a chant of “Jenny, Jenny, Jenny.” The NL took a brief 6-5 lead.
In the bottom of the 3rd, the AL reclaimed the lead with more homers from Henderson and Salmon. Bo Jackson also showed that Bo knows softball with another home run. Another five spot for the AL gave them a 10-6 lead.
The NL got one back in the 4th, but the AL scored five more in the bottom half of the inning. Former Angel Fred Lynn continued the reunion party with a 3 run homer. The AL lead 15-7. In the 5th and final inning, Duncan told Carter “This ain’t 1986, this is 2010.” Carter singled to load the bases, and Piazza hit a grand slam. But that was it for the NL, and the AL won the game 15-11. Salmon won the MVP.
