Is The Home Run Derby A Dinosaur?
Written by Christopher Corazon, Monday July 12 2010
The Home Run Derby is tonight, and David Ortiz will participate in his fourth derby, although it is the first time he has been in it since 2006. Miguel Cabrera and Matt Holliday are both trying for the second time. The remaining five contestants are all trying for the first time.
Corey Hart, Chris Young, Hanley Ramirez, and Vernon Wells are all competing in their first home run derby. Nick Swisher, who campaigned with great excitement to be on the team with the final internet vote, also signed up.
Missing from the competition are well known sluggers like Albert Pujols or Alex Rodriguez. Prince Fielder will not try to win for a second consecutive year. It can be an opportunity to make a name for yourself on a national stage, the way Josh Hamilton did in 2008. But if the biggest stars continue to decline, will MLB just make the competition go extinct?

as a footnote, I had tickets to the HR derby in 1988, it was in Cincinnati, and this was before it was a big deal. the event was in the daytime, and when it was rained out, we got free tickets to the zoo...
