100 Sporting Events You Must See Live
Written by Daniel Harris, Tuesday June 15 2010
For every sports fan, there is nothing like being in the middle of the action. Getting up close and personal with your favorite players is one of the most thrilling experiences for any person (and by person I mean male sports fan). Why? Two reasons stand out to me. 1. People always gain a sense of excitement when they can see famous atheletes in their flesh. It is an experience that can not be matched anywhere else in life. 2. People like to say they were THERE. What do I mean by this? Well, imagine one of your friends invites you to the 2009 Big East Basketball Tournament at MSG. It's the quarter final round and the four teams scheduled to play in the night session (Pittsburgh, West Virginia, Syracuse and Connecticut) are all on the national radar as teams that could make a big splash in the NCAA tournament. So, why do you decide to go to the game rather than watch it on television? Simple, what if this is the night that something tremendous happens? Or, what if the second game of the doubleheader between Syracuse and Uconn goes into 6 overtimes. (Trust me, I did not think of this as a possibility when I decided to go to MSG that night). People would be talking about that game forever. It would become an instant classic on ESPN. Extended coverage of the game would last weeks and basketball fans would call it the most exciting college basketball game EVER, and you get to say you were THERE. For years, people will ask you what the experience was like, how electric the Garden was that night, how late you got home, and how you managed to get to work the next day because you were so hungover.
You may be wondering why I am telling you this, well it's because for me as an avid sports fan and follower of every major sport, there are about 30 times a year where I turn on the TV to watch a game, and I say to myself, "Wow, I wish I was there!" After talking it over with my friends, we argued for hours about which sporting events we must see live before we die. A few days later, still stuck on this topic I found Rob Tuchman's book, 100 Sporting Events You Must See Live. The book chronicals exactly what I was looking for, a sports fans guide to live sporting events, where to stay, what to eat, even where to sit at each stadium or arena. The goal of Tuchman's book is to get readers to feel passionate about attending these events, and it far exceeds them. He inspired me to fly across the country this year to Anaheim, CA to watch the 2010 MLB All-Star game, live. (Trust me, I don't have the money for it). A must read for sports fans looking to do some traveling.
As for the All-Star Game, it won't go 6 overtimes, but hey a few extra innings can't hurt.
