Even though Super Bowl odds are what’s hot right now, there’s an intriguing matchup on the college hardwood this weekend, as No.1 Texas tries to bounce back from their first loss of the season, but they’re heading on the road to face Connecticut, who is playing for an absent coach right now.
Texas vs UConn betting – Saturday, January 23, 4:00 PM ET
The Longhorns (17-1, 3-1) couldn’t overcome another first-half deficit in a 71-62 loss at Kansas State, and this was a defensive battle. Texas shot 36.8% from the field while holding the Wildcats to 38.5%. The probably would have won if they were better at the foul line, where Texas missed 13 of their 22 attempts, and Damion Janes had an awful night, going 3-of-12 for nine points. The Longhorns were even outrebounded, and Dexter Pittman and Avery Bradley got into foul trouble. Texas is still one of the favorites of betting management players when it comes to the Final Four, but they’ll need to refocus in a hurry.
The Huskies (12-6, 3-3) snapped a three-game skid with a 75-59 win over St. John’s in their first game without coach Jim Calhoun, who took a medical leave of absence for undisclosed reasons. The Huskies shot 56.9% from the field and outrebounded St. John’s 34-28, while getting a good night from their big trio of Jerome Dyson (21 points), Stanley Robinson (18 points) and Kemba Walker (17 points).
The Huskies will probably be the sportsbook favorites at home in Storrs, where they are 12-1. Texas lost in their only trip to UConn back in 2000, and they’ll be up against a determined team that is playing for Calhoun. The trio of Walker, Robinson and Dyson is as good as any in the country, but the UConn big men will have their hands full with Pittman and James in the post, and these two will be eager to show that the Kansas State game was a fluke. Another big factor will be the Texas bench, as the Longhorns are one of the deepest teams in the country, and they didn’t play to their ability against the Wildcats, so look for that to change this weekend at UConn. Go for the upset in your bookmaker odds.
